The Gritti Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Venice
I’ve wanted to travel to Venice for as long as I can remember. My fairytale image of Venice consisted of seeing the sun shining off the grand canal so that the bright blue water was sparkling, hearing gondoliers serenading lovers with Italian love ballads, and strolling through churches and plazas in awe of the rich history around me. When Ben and I arrived to Venice yesterday it was the highest water surge in 50 years. There was no way to get to our hotel for hours because docks were closed and the streets were flooded. We stood shivering on the side on the street where the water was the lowest to devise a plan and then took one of the working taxi boats back and forth to try and find an open dock that could lead to a non flooded street. Worse, 2 people died in this storm. Shops and restaurants suffered horrible damages and people’s homes and livelihoods were harmed. My heart was broken for this incredible city. Then, we arrived to our hotel (@thegrittipalace , most dreamy hotel ever) and were greeted with the warmest hospitality and positivity in the world. As the water began to recede, Venetians quickly sprang into action to clean up and rebuild. All with smiles on their faces. Today, shops and restaurants began to reopen and I got my fairytale Venice. I got to see the gondoliers and sparkle of the canal but also the resilience and unity of this magical city. Though there was certainly devastation, the media is dramatizing the conditions now and it is completely safe to come to Venice. Please send your prayers and love to this city. @indagaretravel #howyoutravelmatters
